FASHION DESIGN BASICS

PROGRAM


Objective:to introduce the student to the basics of fashion design, developing initial practical skills in sketching, color, and fabric representation.

 

Module 1 – Introduction to Fashion Design (4h)

  • Brief overview of fashion and the role of the designer
  • Notes onthe history of fashion and styles(key periods, cultural influences)
  • Basic terminology of the industry


Module 2 – Proportions and Figure Drawing (10h)

  • Study of theproportions of the human body
  • Differences between male, female, and child figures
  • Dynamic and static poses
  • Notes on perspective and movement


Module 3 – Drawing and Coloring Methods (12h)

  • Basic tools (pencils, markers, watercolors, pastels)
  • Techniques forquick sketching
  • Manual coloring methods: shades, shadows, highlights
  • Introduction tocolor theories(color wheel, color harmonies, contrasts)


Module 4 – Styles and Clothing (10h)

  • Introduction to the mainclothing styles(casual, elegant, sporty, haute couture, streetwear…)
  • How to represent proportionate clothing on the figure
  • Design of basic garments (shirt, pants, dress, jacket, skirt)

 

Module 5 – Textures and Materials (8h)

  • Graphic representation of simple fabrics (cotton, silk, denim, wool)
  • Basics ofdigital drawingwith basic software (Photoshop or Illustrator – introductory level only)


Module 6 – Final Project (6h)

  • Creation of a mini collection of3 designed and colored outfits, with proportionate figures, a coherent color palette, and representation of fabrics.

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Draw proportionate figures in static and dynamic poses.
  • Represent basic garments for both women's and men's clothing.
  • Use manual coloring techniques (pencils, markers, watercolors) for the graphic rendering of figures.
  • Correctly apply the main color harmonizations.
  • Reproduce simple textures and materials (cotton, denim, wool, silk).
  • Create a final project in the form of a mini illustrated collection with a coherent palette

Educational objectives

  • Provide anintroductory preparationon fashion design, with particular attention to figure drawing and the representation of clothing.
  • Introduce the student to theproportions of the human bodyand basic graphic techniques for fashion.
  • Develop initial skills in the use ofcolorapplied to fashion design, through color theories and practical experimentation.
  • Start the student onrepresentation of fabrics and textureson paper and digitally at a basic level.
  • Become familiar with the mainstyles of clothingand with the methods of proportionate drawing of garments.
  • Guide to creating amini personal collection(3 outfits) as the first design exercise.
